Welcome to The Away Today!
I’m an avid world traveler, constantly planning my next trip, and endlessly intrigued by everything the world has to offer. The idea of being a digital nomad has always been on my mind, but I’ve come to realize that I enjoy having a home base. I enjoy the simple pleasures of life surrounded by family and friends. It seems like a lot of people drop everything and live on the road for years at a time, but for a lot of us, that simply isn’t attainable. Even so, I daydream about just getting away today, as I assume most people do. I love traveling, it’s by far my biggest hobby, but I enjoy being grounded and financially stable. At the moment, it requires only traveling on my 4-5 weeks of PTO a year.
Born a traveler
I was born in Seoul, South Korea, due to my dad’s Air Force assignment there. As a family, we moved to Idaho, Alabama, Virginia, Germany, Alaska, and back to Virginia before I was 14. I’m so fortunate to grow up seeing different parts of the world. I can’t pinpoint that moment where I fell in love with travel, it’s always been ingrained in me.
I enjoy my current profession as a construction manager/engineer, and as of now, my job creates the ability for me to travel comfortably and often enough. Taking a lot of 3-day weekends around the US rather than using weeks of vacation at a time works well for me. Most travel websites and blogs have a niche of some sort – affordable travel, fashion and travel, couple travel, solo travel, you name it. For now, I suppose my niche is a passion for travel, without committing to it full time. I love receiving tips about cities and countries, learning more about different cultures, and sharing stories I’ve experienced – why not create a website that can easily orchestrate all of that.
I’m looking forward to sharing tips, locations, photography, embarrassing stories, and hopefully inspiration to anyone who visits this site! Feel free to drop a line, offer some advice, or ask any questions about the content on the site. Happy travels!
